"A group of 12 people from Atherstone visited the Punjab in India during February. The trip, organised by Mejar and Kulwinder Singh of Masters Bakery was part holiday part charitable and included a visit to a school (see photo) that is financed by the Lions International organisation and a visit to a free eye clinic being held in a local Punjab village for the benefit of locals who have never had any optician services.
We brought gifts and supplies to both enterprises including unwanted spectacles collected as a result of an appeal in the Tavern, Market Street. While in India, we visited the Golden Temple at Amritsar, the Red fort in Delhi and of course the Taj Mahal in Agra. We were impressed by the kindness and generosity shown by the people we met in India, a country of huge contrasts and boundless energy." |
